The Best Of SCI Awareness Month: Narumi's Story
September is SCI Awareness Month, which is crazy because Luke’s accident happened September 4th, 2023. So, yes, it’s been a year that we’ve been on this road, and man was it a long one. Reflecting back at this time last year is quite emotional to think about. Luke’s accident resulted in him being a C4 quad, and for us his loved ones being so lost on what this journey would entail. All I remember is feeling overwhelmed by everything we had to learn at rehab, but at the same time feeling gratitude that I still got to experience Luke being alive.
Though this year has been full of many trials and tribulations for us, I truly believe Luke and I wouldn’t be as strong and motivated as we are today. Since the accident we have done so much growing together and individually! We got engaged, Luke is getting his certification in cybersecurity, we are moving into our own place in a couple months, I am soon going back to school part time, Luke has worked his butt off in therapy and is getting some arm movement going, and I have learned how to whip up some good meals in the kitchen haha.
If someone were to tell me in that first month of the accident that this is what our future would look like a year from now, I wouldn’t have believed it. I was so afraid of the future, of the long road we had ahead of us. But, now I couldn’t be more thankful for the way it all played out. SCI life is definitely a road of lots of work to put in, but it is still a beautiful life that you grow to love. Im so excited to see what Luke and I’s future will look like a year from now let alone ten years from now
