Robyn Wishart, the official legal advocate of the WAGS of SCI Community, weighs in on her advice for mothers who are also caregivers of someone with an SCI
Caring for your children following a Spinal Cord injury.
As a mother, you want to ensure your family receives the best care possible. Balancing work, household responsibilities, children's schooling, and extracurricular commitments is already challenging. And all mother’s think they can do it all. Now, add the complex care needs of a loved one who has suffered a spinal cord injury.
All mothers aspire to be primary caregivers for their families. However, spinal cord injuries present unique challenges, requiring continuous, often uncomfortable care and assistance for life. Trained medical attendants can provide the necessary care and address health concerns promptly and properly.
Remember, it is ok to ask for help. Asking for help doesn't mean giving in or abandoning your loved one; it's essential for everyone's well-being. Seeking help is actually making sure that everyone in your family is receiving the care and attention they require.
Various private and government agencies offer caregiving support, allowing you to reclaim your roles as a wife and mother. Remember, these agencies are paid to provide care — you are not. Without a work-life balance, you will experience burnout and may not be able to provide the level of care you want for your family.
